Duarte was a 19th century visionary and liberal thinker and is widely considered the architect of the Dominican Republic and its independence from Haitian rule in 1844

Juan pablo Duarte, the country's founding father, conceived the original design and obtained approval for it from Los Trinitarios on June 16, 1838.
